on may 13, 1886, carlo mense was born in rheine in westphalia. At the request of his father, he initially begins a commercial teaching, which he breaks off to devote himself to painting. In 1906 mense wrote down at the düsseldorf academy and became a student of the history painter peter janssen. A trip to italy with his brother rudolf leads him to ascona, where he comes into contact with life -reform movements that are supposed to influence him sustainably. After janssen's death in 1908, menese continued to study august mackes at lovis corinth in berlin, but leaves the city again after the winter semester to continue his studies in weimar and munich. In 1911 he joined the "coelner sezession" and the "gereonsclub" just founded. Already in 1912 menses's works were exhibited at the legendary special association exhibition in cologne, in 1913 he was represented at the show "the rhenish expressionists" in bonn. From this, contact with herwarth walden develops, for whose magazines "die aktion" and "the sturm" mense graphic works contributes. Close friendship connects the artist with heinrich m. Davringhausen, with whom he travels to ascona in 1914. With the outbreak of the first world war, the artist is also moved in; he only returns to the rhineland after the end of the war. Mense is now one of the leading personalities of the "society for art" that the magazine "der strom" founds. In 1918/19 he also joined the associations "the young rhineland" and the "november group". After his marriage to vera bashe, mense often stays in munich and maintains close contacts with paul klee and the schwabingen art scene. Among others, oskar kokoschka, josef eberz, georg schrimpf and especially richard seewald belong to the narrower circle. Alexander kanoldt also joined 1923. Due to the desolate financial situation, mense stays in positano for a long time. In the meantime, the art critic franz roh takes care of selling his pictures. In 1925 mense finally received a professorship at the state academy of art and art and crafts in wroclaw, where he makes friends with oskar schlemmer. In 1932, however, the academy was closed and mense loses its job. The awarding of the rome prize gives him a scholarship until the summer of 1934. In the course of the confiscation of "degenerate art", 34 paintings by the artist are moved in by the national socialists from public collections. After participating in world war ii until the beginning of 1944, mense settled in bad honnef after the bomb attacks destroyed his studio. As a result, it will be quiet around him, only in 1956, on the occasion of his 70th birthday, a solo exhibition takes place in königswinter again this piece has an attribution mark,
