Edward Cucuel was born in San Francisco, the son of a newspaper publisher. At the age of 14, he attended the art academy in his home city. While still a teenager, he was employed as an illustrator by the newspaper "The Examiner". When Cucuel was sent to Paris at the age of 17, he entered the Académie Julian and the Académie Colarossi. He then moved to the Académie des Beaux Arts under Jean Léon Gérôme. In 1896, Cucuel returned to America and settled in New York. After six months, during which Cucuel again worked as a newspaper illustrator, he returned to Paris to devote himself to fine art. He spends two years there, then travels to France and Italy to study the Old Masters. Back in Germany, Cucuel moved to Berlin, where he worked mainly as an illustrator. In 1907, he moved to Munich, the city that was to become his home for a long time. There, Cucuel joined the artists' group "Scholle", in which Leo Putz was the outstanding artistic personality who took care of him in artistic matters. In Munich, Cucuel also took part in the exhibitions of the Secession. This piece has an attribution mark,
