Pair of Mini-Caryatids, Nickel Plated 24 Element Puzzle Sculpture, 1968-1969, Miguel Berrocal. Signature and number engraved. Edition of 9500 pieces. Ref. Catalogo general/obras recientes, 1974, p. 13. Dimension of each piece: 15x6 cm. Good conditions. Miguel Berrocal (Villanueva de Algaidas, September 28, 1933 - Antequera, May 31, 2006) was a Spanish sculptor and artist also known as the sculptor of puzzles, due to the particularity of his sculptures. from his youth he was interested in a system of sculpture removable and combinative that characterizes all of his later sculptural work. In it there is a constant search for new concepts and unknown spaces within it, allowing the viewer to enter the world of construction and deconstruction. Berrocal's work disrupts the traditional notion of sculpture, going beyond the contemporary concept. His demountable sculpture allows the intrusion of the internal form into the external, the sculpture is made from within and for within; for the first time sculpture is stripped of its surface to reveal its most hidden part. He resorts to classical themes and, above all, to a certain anthropomorphism to avoid an excessively geometric and abstract result, despite the evident strong influence of mathematics and architecture in his works, fruit of his personality and of his academic training. The meticulousness and precision in the realization of the elements that make up his sculptures, the accuracy of the technical drawings and subsequent joints, allow each piece that is part of the work to have its own identity, to be itself a work of art. 'art. It is due to the difficulty in making each of his sculptures that, since 1962, he decides to make them in serial form. The realization in serial form allows the sculptor to multiply his works, in the same way in which painters multiply their paintings, thanks to the Graphic Arts. In this way, the same theme is repeated in distinct forms, with new elements, combined and arranged in different ways. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
