This catalog book was published on the occasion of the " Richard Diebenkorn " The Ocean Park Series " exhibition at The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, Orange county Museum of Art Newport Beach, and The Corcoran Gallery of Art Washington D.C..
Richard Diebenkorn ( 1922 - 1993 ) was an American painter who's early work is associated with Abstract Expressionism and The Bay Area Figurative Movement of the 1950's and 1960's. His later works were instrumental to his achievement of worldwide acclaim. The artworks were influenced by other important Modern artists including Clyfford Still, Willem De Kooning, Arshile Gorky and Henri Matisse. Described as one of the premier American painters of The Postwar Era, Diebenkorn's deeply lyrical abstractions evoked the shimmering light and wide open spaces of California where he spent most of his entire life. His artworks are included in the collections of many of the most prestigious museums.
Diebenkorn began his " Ocean Park " Series in 1967, soon after moving from San Francisco to Southern California, where his friend and fellow painter Sam Francis invited him to take over his studio in The Ocean Park Neighborhood of Santa Monica. Here he began creating his best known body of work, The Ocean Park Series. The paintings in this series are not strict depictions of the Ocean Park landscape. Instead they represent his exploration of the interplay of light, color, and architecture around him. The seminal Ocean Park group of works is arguably the most celebrated of his illustrious career.
This stunning exhibition volume celebrates in-depth for the first time this important series, serving as a major reference and source of new scholarship on the artworks. This book features beautifully reproduced works that radiate with color, allowing appreciation of the artist's evolving palette as well as his brilliant geometric explorations.
The paintings, prints, drawings, and collages that make up the series are examined from diverse perspectives in compelling essays that bring to light new influences and conceptual frameworks that reposition The Ocean Park Series, as well as the artist's role in the history of Postwar Art. The result is an informative and thoughtful re-examination of a major body of work of this quintessential California artist.
