Heywood Wakefield rose to popularity in the 1930s, 40s, and 50s with its solid wood, Art Deco-inspired mid-century modern furniture. The organic forms and curved lines of Heywood Wakefield furniture is consistent with the trends of the mid 1900s which appeal to the style of Scandinavian design. Heywood Wakefield furniture features designs similar to those made famous in Scandinavia during the post war period and typically focuses on light colored or blonde woods.
Heywood Wakefield furniture lacked sharp edges and was characterized by its sleek curves. To create curved furniture, Heywood-Wakefield utilized a method called steam bending. This process involved steaming the wood until it was malleable enough to bend without snapping. Then, the wood would be placed in a drying oven for up to a day so that the furniture would hold its curved shape.
All Heywood Wakefield furniture was made from solid Northern Yellow Birch. It’s also sometimes called Golden Birch. The lumber itself varies from a light reddish brown to a creamy white coloration. It’s close-grained, with an attractive straight or slightly wavy grain, and has a notably uniform texture. The wood is particularly cooperative when it comes to holding stain, too. Northern Yellow Birch lumber is also heavy, dense, and strong, which helps make for sturdy, durable furniture. less
