A portrait, marine and landscape painter, Arthur Josiah Hammond (A. J. Hammond) was born April 3, 1875, in Vernon, Connecticut. He studied five years at the Pape School of Design, Boston, Massachusetts, and also was tutored by George Loftus Noyes (1864-1954) and Charles Herbert Woodbury (1864-1940).
In 1905, Hammond and his wife, Ruth Freese Hammond, traveled for two and one half years in England, Wales, France, Belgium and Holland, where he studied and made some 300 paintings, particularly along the Cornish coast and in Paris. In 1915, he, his wife and son Maro Freese Hammond, drove west, where Hammond painted in California, New Mexico and Arizona. Subsequent painting trips to the West occurred in 1923 and 1934-35.While Hammond and his family summered in Rockport, Massachusetts for 25 years, he made many marine paintings in the Cape Ann region. The Hammonds wintered in Deerfield, New Hampshire, where his subject matter included winter scenes, and mountain and rural landscapes, and moved permanently to their home on Pond Road in 1950. He died at the Concord, New Hampshire hospital on August 15, 1958, and was buried in the Freese-Hammond family cemetery located beside his Deerfield home. less
