The Renaissance Revival period of the late 19th century brought reproduction homages to the great works of art into the stylish homes in England after they had embarked on their Grand Tour. These would have been brought back as souvenir's of their travels through the art world of Italy or recreated by artists back at home. This one I believe originated in London based on the english "by" vs. the italian "di" in the attribution.
This bust is a reproduction of Donatello's work "Unknown Woman". This is impressed into the back of the bust which also has an impression of LM which would be the initials of the maker. Many of these have been altered through the years -- but this one retains its original paint job although it shows its patina though some paint flaked off (no chips or breaks). These are the colors of Donatello's original works. The piece has antique felt on the bottom placed to protect furniture.
Donatello (1386 – 1466) was Italian artist who was the leading sculptor of the early Renaissance. He gave a different direction to Western art taking it away from the prevalent Gothic style, which was marked by softly curved lines and an expressionless face, to the Classical style with dramatic expressions and detailed realism. Donatello pioneered several artistic techniques, like schiacciato (flattened out). His techniques and works would have a profound and immense influence on later generations of Renaissance artists.
