Karen Karnes (1925 -2016) was a ceramic artist who lived and worked in New York City. She is recognized for her wheel-thrown pieces, salt-glazed pottery, and lidded vessels. She attended Brooklyn College where she graduated with a major in design. She then traveled to Italy where she concentrated on her ceramics practice in Sesto Fiorentino, and learned how to use the pottery wheel. Karnes later returned to New York where she started a graduate program at Alfred University to continue her study of ceramics. By 1952, Karnes, alongside her husband, David Weinrib, had a two-year residency at Black Mountain College where they studied and worked alongside artists John Cage, Robert Rauschenberg, and Peter Voulkos. Karen Karnes was a leading American ceramicist in the post-war period, producing mainly domestic pieces until she turned more to sculptural pieces in the latter part of her life. Her work uses salt glazes extensively and is commonly wood-fired. She exhibited extensively in the USA, Europe, and beyond, and her work is found in museum and gallery collections across the USA.
This gorgeous lidded vessel and plate has a stripe effect with touches of neutrals and warm effects of olive in certain areas. The lid is a wide rim typical of her work commonly used on vases and lidded pots. The vessel and plate are impressed with Karnes KK stamp. The pottery is in perfect condition with no damage or age.
