The ebony box was made in Ceylon, The Colonial name for Sri Lanka. 

The Antique Anglo-Indian ebony box is handcrafted with porcupine quills and enhanced with bone dots.
 The opening is a top with hinges. Lovely raised top. The interior has black felt, ebony with dots and an elephant.

These boxes are hand-made and are each slightly different in size and/or appearance due to actual natural porcupine quills (quills are naturally shed and are used without harm to the animals). 

These boxes have become hard to find in the U.S. with prohibited agriculture and animal products being imported.
