I found this Dog Handled Harker Rockingham Pitcher in an upscale antique store in Rhinebeck, NY. The minute I saw it I was captivated. and immediately purchased it. I found it both charming and rare - I had never seen such a unique piece in such pristine condition. It has been a focal point in my home ever since.

This unique and impressive Antique Dog Handle Pitcher is a Harker Rockingham Reproduction produced in the US. (1848). The earthen ombre hues and beautiful deep glazing attest to the hand-painted design of flora and fauna that intricately adorn the pitcher. The dog handle is beautifully detailed and richly painted. The upper rim/spout sports flowers in full bloom, while the body of the pitcher depicts deer in their forest habitat.

This iconic Rockingham-glazed pitcher was originally manufactured by the Harker & Taylor Co, in Ohio during their short existence between 1848-1852. You may find similar pitchers online that are not hand-painted (are not mélange/multi-colored) and are of lesser quality/imperfections; but this pitcher is in pristine condition - there are no imperfections, making it rare and highly valued. Attesting to its historic and rare value, you will find the identical piece on exhibit in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. less
