The field of coastal landscapes is a genre that has been explored by countless artists throughout history, "Beach Chairs" being a case in point, a lithograph signed in pencil, numbered 210/500 by Californian and self-taught artist Dennis Hare, dedicated to a certain Mark. A meditation on the inherent art born of the interaction of water, man, color, and imagination emerges.
In front of us, a group of five unoccupied beach chairs, arranged around a coffee table in apparent simplicity.
The backdrop: a calm sea stretching to the horizon, the eternal presence of nature, its tranquil expanse crossed by a few silhouettes, adults and children enjoying the timeless rituals of seaside times.
Dennis Hare, born in 1946, is a Californian artist with a remarkable career spanning 35 years, and a former beach volleyball player and athlete. While renowned for his figurative art, Hare has seamlessly transitioned into the realm of abstract assemblage, showcasing his versatility through over 55 solo exhibitions. Notably, he holds a prestigious place in the Beach Volleyball Hall of Fame, and his seminal work, "The Art of Beach Volleyball," marked his entry into the world of art.
Hare's artistic journey began in 1979 with watercolors, leading to his membership in the National Watercolor Society. His exclusive focus on oils by 1986 catapulted him to success in the 1980s. Despite being self-taught, he meticulously studied classic talents in museums, refining his craft.
In his art, Hare primarily employs oil but incorporates a range of materials, including discarded items and weathered objects, adding depth and character to his pieces. His studio at home serves as a showcase for his work, which has graced renowned galleries across the United States, including Westbrook Galleries, Art Cube, Crocker Art Museum, and the Donna Seager Gallery in Laguna Beach, San Rafael, and Carmel. He is also represented by galleries in New York, San Francisco, and Laguna Beach.
Throughout his career, Hare's art has been featured in influential exhibitions alongside other prominent artists. He is not only a creator but also an educator, offering lectures and workshops on self-expression and the artist's journey. less
