Very cool, retro, vintage, reproduction of an English pub's signage. This particular sign's message is a promotion for Bayshore Mineral Natural Oils Company. One would assume that these signs are made primarily with fictitious company names. But I did look up the company name used, and there is such a company in British Columbia with that name. So, it's anyone's guess! There is an interesting history to British pub signs. The main take away from reading about their history, is that, back in Medieval times, most people were illiterate. They used graphic pub signs to allow those looking for food, ale or shelter to find what they needed. King Richard II passed an Act in 1393 that made it compulsory for inns to have a sign. This was so that the official ale taster could identify them and record his findings. In 1751 another law was passed that ensured that every pub or inn had a name registered with the prefix ‘at the sign of.’ One of the oldest pubs in England is ‘Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem’ in Nottingham which was established in 1189. It is thought to have been a place where the knights and fighting men stopped on the way to meet up with King Richard I ‘the Lionheart.’ So pub signs have been around a loooong time and make for interesting and light hearted home/business decor. If you read the sign further, you will see, if you have that kind of mindset, that the Grounds Explored and Drilling Carried Out in Virgin Territory, eludes to some very risqué and racy proclamations. Much of Olde English writings use such euphemisms!!!
This sign is in great vintage condition. It purposefully was made to look used and distressed. The 3D effect of the oil rig and accompanying buildings and equipment is well done. The colors are rustic. It measures 36" at widest x 23" at tallest x 3" deep at widest. Great decor for any home bar/business, man cave, family den. Made of wood. less
