This exquisite handcrafted verre églomisé wall mirror was produced by the Colombian company Byzantia in the late 1960s. This company from Bogota, according to the surviving label on the back of the mirror, was located in the offices of the Hotel Bogotá Hilton.
Verre Églomisé is a French term meaning "gilded glass" and refers to the process of applying design and gilding to the back of glass to produce a mirror-like shine.
This wall mirror has a wooden base with Églomisé panels on the front, hand-painted with stylized neoclassical motifs. The first level around the mirror is decorated with floral patterns. The second level is made of small individual miniatures depicting doves, flowers and curls of leaves. Central, top miniature with the image of two doves and, one for two, a red heart.
The smaller scalloped mirrors and painted panels in the Eglomise style are showing their age with lots of cracking, oxidation, desilvering and paint cracking. These “imperfections” do not detract from the overall appearance of the mirror and enhance its vintage character. The original large mirror in the center has age-related changes: slight clouding, several vertical stripes on the right and a small peeling of the mirror foil.
This rare mirror is a stunning piece of art. And it will be a great gift for people who love each other!
