Wassily Kandinsky (1866 - 1944) was a Russian painter, graphic artist and art theorist. He is a pioneer of abstract art. He graduated in law and economics from the University of Moscow, but since childhood he was interested in art and music. Fascinated by the work of Claude Monet, he decided to study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. Later he went to Waimar, where he was a lecturer at the Bauhaus university for 3 years. In addition to theoretical lectures, he also had a painting studio. He traveled a lot all the time, drawing inspiration and observations from emerging new forms of art. Eventually he settled permanently in Paris. Kandinsky focused on the basic colors red-yellow-blue and the basic shapes circle-triangle-square. He was the author not only of many theoretical and autobiographical works, but also of woodcuts, gouaches, watercolors, and paintings on glass. However, he owed his fame primarily to large abstract compositions.
Paul Klee (1879 - 1940) was a Swiss-German painter, graphic artist and illustrator. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. There he also met Kandinsky. He created using watercolors, ink and oil paints. He was inspired by expressionism, cubism and surrealism but created his own style. He was fascinated by color theory, abstract forms and shapes, music and poetry. His early works depicted portraits, landscapes and still lifes. As his career progressed, his works became more abstract and symbolic.
