Boch Frères Keramis Co. was a Belgian ceramic company known for their Cloisonné techniques, early 20th-century Art Deco styles, and use of black outlined designs. The company was founded in 1841 by Eugène and Victor Boch and their brother-in-law, Jean-Baptiste Nothomb, in La Louviere, Belgium. Decades later in 1906, French ceramicist Charles Catteau joined the company as artistic director, a position he held for 42 years. His signature Art Deco designs were influenced by Japonisme, Cubism, and abstraction of nature, and he was ultimately responsible for the company’s transition from producing utilitarian objects to esteemed works of art. Boch Frères Keramis closed down in 1985.
Offered here is for a stunningly beautiful large ironstone washstand set by Boch Freres Keramis. The mark on the bottom of the pitcher was used by the company from 1880 to 1920. The cream colored background is decorated with a neoclassical medallion and laurel leaf design done in rich burgundy and gold.
Basin measures 16 1/2" in diameter and stands about 8" tall. Pitcher measures about 13 1/4" tall up to the tallest point, which is at the side of the spout. Its footprint measures 4 1/2" in diameter.
No chips, cracks, or unusual wear on the pitcher. The basin has a repair on the outside of the rim. (It looks like there was a shallow chip off of the finish, and someone glued the fleck back on and tried to paint over it). Because the rim flares out slightly, the repair is sort of tucked under the rim and isn't noticeable. I have included a close up photo of the repair under the rim, as well as a photo of the topside of the rim in that area.
It's very rare to find a set this old still together, and also in such fabulous condition. An absolutely lovely set. It will make a statement in any room.
