It is hard to imagine what life was like before we had plastic containers, paper bags and cardboard boxes. But up until the 1800s, most things were carried or stored in baskets or wooden containers. This beauty was handcrafted in the style of a Bushwhacker or Taghkanic basket, which have been woven in a small corner of the Hudson River valley since the mid-eighteenth century. We believe this beauty was handwoven sometime in the 1940s but it may be a bit older. Maker is unknown, as is its origin. Crafted from sturdy black ash splint in a simple over and under weave. The irregularities and variations in color and texture of this basket are characteristics of the wood and the natural aging process, adding to its natural beauty. The lashing on the rim is hickory wood, as noted by the slight difference in grain and color from the basket’s ash splint; handle is bent white oak. Substantial in size, there are endless possibilities on where you can place this beauty in your space; from decorative accent to a keeper of throws or anything else that need to be tucked away but kept close at hand. It measures 14¾ high (includes handle); 9½” high (excluding handle); 15” x 14½” W/D; interior 14½” x 9¼” x D/H; weight 1 lb. 10 oz. In excellent condition with age-appropriate wear. A few of the weavers have split which does not affect its structural integrity or beauty (see photos 11 & 12). From one basket collector to another, it’s hard not to be drawn to its natural beauty!
