*Raymond Sobota was an American furniture designer who was born in 1923 in Hickory, North Carolina. He is best known for his work at Century Furniture Company, where he was the head of design from 1952 to 1986. Sobota's designs were known for their clean lines, simple elegance, and use of natural materials. He was a pioneer in the use of plywood in furniture design, and his work helped to popularize the style in the 1950s and 1960s. Sobota's most famous designs include the Century Brasilia collection, which was inspired by the Brazilian modernist movement. The collection was a commercial success and helped to establish Century Furniture as a leader in modern furniture design. Sobota retired from Century Furniture in 1986, but he continued to design furniture until his death in 2000. His work is still considered to be some of the most influential furniture design of the 20th century. less
