- We've owned these sculptural bookends for many years and I believe they were originally from Chapman. The hands are brass. … more We've owned these sculptural bookends for many years and I believe they were originally from Chapman. The hands are brass. The bases appear to be metal as well, but I'm not sure what type as they're painted matte black. They work equally well with the palms facing up or out. I don't know if they require a Prop 65 warning as there are no markings. less
