Last November, we had the opportunity to design for Mingardo, and we immediately visualised a simple object that could emphasise the superior workshop craftsmanship and its attention to details. We considered a stackable chair, easy to assemble to allow its shipping in a small package. We were not really interested in its final shape; however, we wanted its joint elements, vital for the project success, to be easy to use and to acquire an expressive and narrative key: we wanted them to be perceived as the most valuable parts of the project, as if they were jewels to display. Moreover, we wanted the project to convey the Italian essence to the world. This is how Brugola 01 was created: a modular iron chair characterized by clean and fundamental lines, and a genuine aesthetic enriched by brass countersunk head hex screws. The chair is made up of only 7 elements that can be screwed together: the 4 legs and the cross bracing. These elements constitute the structure, which is made of 20 mm square section metal frames. The chair is completed with the seatback and the circular seat, both obtained from a 5 mm iron plate. The seat features a screw in its centre, where the legs join. Mingardo Ilario founded Mingardo Blacksmith Workshop in 1970, after over twenty years’ experience in the metal processing field. The production was initially focused on simple blacksmith works for the construction industry. Over the time, it has become more refined, enabling the company to collaborate with internationally renowned companies and architects: from the first collaborations with architect Carlo Scarpa to the more recent commissions for Museo del Novecento in Milan, Parco della Musica in Florence, and Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari. Over the years, the Workshop has achieved great results, with the production of unique metal products, all hand-wrought by a highly skilled team of specialized artisans. Nowadays, it is highly regarded in the local artisan field for its high-end refined finishing touches and details, and for its know-how. less
