Artist biography
Kairong Liu came to the United States from mainland China in 1981. Born in 1958, he began studying art quite early in his home city of Wuhan, Hubei, where his parents were both medical doctors. Before emigrating, he worked for two years as a graphic artist for Hubei Forest Machine Company. In America he got a B.A. in art at Westmar University in Le Mars, Iowa, then went on to achieve a master degree in fine arts at the University of South Dakota in 1988. While still at the University, Liu had a one-artist show at the Le Mars Art Center and Omaha, Nebraska. He took part in a group graduate art student's show at nine cities in the Midwest before deciding to settle in the Twin Cities. Here he has given many private painting workshops and has been an instructor at the Minnetonka Center for the Arts and taught classes at Edina and Bloomington Art Centers. Liu's work has been selected for the Minnesota State Fair numerous times.Kairong Liu has captured countless scenes of the Twin Cities and surrounding states. He says that there is always beauty to be found in the most mundane or unexpected places, and he tries to reveal this in his work. He loves to paint outdoor and in the countryside. The artist's style is basically impressionist, tranquil landscapes created from a mosaic of acrylic and oil brush strokes layered light over dark, creating a visual kinetic energy of color that seems to burst off the surface in a harmonious explosion. Kairong reduces color to its purest form rearranging them on the painting in a Seurat like fashion, allowing the viewer's eye to visually mix the paint and assemble the image subconsiously. He loves to paint with vivid and bright colors but also works very effectively with a darker, moodier palette.
Kairong Liu's work has been collected by Mayo Clinic, Cargill, Midwest Federal Reserve Bank and many local businesses and private collectors. He is represented by Art Holdings in the Twin Cities since 1989. less
