Description: 19th c., England, a figured mahogany lap desk banded in brass to protect a piece that was in regular use … more 19th c., England, a figured mahogany lap desk banded in brass to protect a piece that was in regular use and likely travelled with the owner.

The hinged top opens to a gilt tooled leather writing surface and fitted storage compartments. The fitted interior has two inkwell receptacles flanking a pen cove, under which a small hidden storage space is accessed.

A monogrammed brass plaque is centered in the top. A brass rosette escutcheon surrounds the keyhole. The key is retained and the lock functions.
