- Fabulous and very large vintage copper meat dome / cloche featuring a beautiful handle in the form of the Prince … more Fabulous and very large vintage copper meat dome / cloche featuring a beautiful handle in the form of the Prince of Wales' ostrich plume heraldic motif. It is likely this is old Sheffield silver plate from c. 1830s that has lost its plate, revealing the copper underneath. The armorial engraving on the silver plaques on both sides also includes the Prince of Wales' insignia (the plume along with motto "Ich Dien") and "Peninsula 77." All of the symbols on the dome refer to the 77th Regiment of Foot. This is because the 77th, having been formed in India in 1787, was permitted to use the Prince of Wales' iconography and motto as its regimental badge in 1807, commemorating 20 years of Indian service. The regiment saw action in the disastrous Walcheren Campaign in Flanders in 1809, before being sent to Spain to participate in the Peninsular War from June 1811 to August 1814, seeing action at the Battle of El Bodon in 1811, the Sieges of Cuidad Rodrigo and Badajoz in 1812 and the Battle of Bayonne in 1814. This service resulted in the 77th adding "Peninsular" to some versions of its badge, while others retained the Prince of Wales' feathers and motto.
