Large oil painting on original canvas, late 17th century
In the 17th century, many artists were inspired by classical themes from Greek mythology, such as the scene of "Ulysses discovering Astyanax in Hector's tomb". This story, taken from ancient literature, was depicted in a variety of ways in painting during this period.
The story in question comes from Homer's epic work, the Iliad, in which Ulysses, the famous Greek hero, discovers the young Trojan prince Astyanax in the tomb of his father Hector, the fallen Trojan prince. This discovery is tinged with tragedy, symbolizing the end of the Trojan War and the defeat of the Trojan city.
Later period frame.
