Toni Stadler was born in Munich on September 5, 1888. His father, the Austrian-born Anton von Stadler (called Toni), was a landscape painter and co-founder of the Munich Secession in 1893. As a result, his son was introduced to art by him at an early age before entering the Munich School of Applied Arts in 1906. In 1909, Toni Stadler went to August Gaul's studio in Berlin, where he produced sculptural animal studies and came into contact with the circle around Max Liebermann and Paul Cassirer. Back in Munich, Stadler initially worked freelance from 1911, but was called up for military service in 1914-18. On his return, he went to the Munich Academy of Fine Arts, where he was taught by Hermann Hahn. In 1925, he married Hedda von Kaulbach before going to Paris for two years, where he learned in particular from Aristide Maillol. Stadler was also very impressed by the ancient sculpture of the Egyptians, Etruscans and Greeks. After his return to Munich in 1927, he devoted himself primarily to small sculptures and portrait heads. In 1934 Stadler won the Rome Prize of the Prussian Academy of Arts, and the following year he was a guest at the Villa Massimo in Rome together with Gerhard Mack. This piece has an attribution mark,
