The 9" plate is part of the Numeral series - Roman Numeral One being depicted with a white & black background with an elegant figure wearing a vibrant headdress and posed against a column to create the numeral. making the letter A shape. It exhibits the classic Art Deco style for which Erté is known.
Elegant and glamorous design, with intricate detailing in black enhancing the sophistication of this collectible piece. Made in Japan of fine bone china, this plate is a unique decorative item that can be framed for display on walls or in a display case. Features Erte's signature, date 1986, and Made in Japan markings on reverse. Measuring 12 inches in diameter, it is perfect for art lovers and collectors alike.
Erte, born Romain de Tirtoff (1892 - 1990), was a Russian-born French artist and designer, widely recognized for his glamorous and theatrical designs across various fields including fashion, jewelry, graphic arts, costume, and set design for film, theatre, and opera.
Erte moved to Paris at the age of 20, and his unique and exotic designs quickly gained him recognition in the fashion world. He began his career with Harper’s Bazaar magazine, where he worked for over 22years, creating over 200 covers. His illustrious career in fashion saw him designing for many of the era’s most renowned couturiers, including Paul Poiret.
In his later years, Erte turned to the creation of limited edition prints and bronze sculptures, which have also received wide acclaim. Erte’s influence and legacy are undeniable, as he left an indelible mark on the 20th-century art world, shaping the aesthetic standards of the Art Deco movement. Despite his passing in 1990, his work continues to captivate and inspire, affirming his status as a true pioneer and iconic figure in the world of decorative arts.
