Venetian gondoliera, werkstatte hagenauer vienna, ca. 1940, brass, marked with their artistic objects, karl and franz hagenauer catered to longings and desires that were often unattainable for many, especially during the time of privation after the second world war. Our “gondoliera” exemplifies the yearning for such a place of longing. Standing upright and rowing with just one oar, she navigates the slender gondola through the waterways of venice. Completely in the style of werkstätte hagenauer, the gondola with the female nude presents itself in an extremely reduced form. As a female gondoliere, the lady guides her boat with great strength and takes us on a journey through the lagoon city. Through her elongated limbs, her body appears dynamic and, at the same time, very elegant. Marked with “handmade”, “hagenauer/wien”, “made in/vienna/austria”, “whw” in the circle this piece has an attribution mark,
