Standing on a bronze dore base, the composition features a … more This antique bronze sculpture was created in France, circa 1880. Standing on a bronze dore base, the composition features a patinated bronze Labrador dog standing on rocky ground and playing with a small rabbit hidden behind foliage. The elegant art work is in excellent condition with wonderful details and rich two-tone patinated and gilt finish. The sculpture is signed on the base by the artist, J. Moigniez; the artist conveys action and energy through the shape, movement and texture of the dog figure. This sculpture composition would make a lovely addition to a shelf in a library or on top of a man's desk in a study. A wonderful gift for any dog lover.
Jules Moigniez (1835-1894) was a French animalier sculptor who was active during the 19th century. His output was primarily cast in bronze and he frequently exhibited his sculptures at the Paris Salon. He was best known for his bronzes depicting birds, although his skill and versatility enabled him to produce quality horse sculptures (primarily racehorses), dog sculptures and hunting scenes. His bird and dog sculptures were among the finest ever created during his time. Listed in the Benezit (see last picture).
