An elegant and distinctive French candlestick made of transparent lead crystal; the shape, full of soft curves and rounded ends, captivates us with its unparalleled refined plasticity and lightness; the design is simple and decisive, expertly proportioned, the result of intelligent aesthetic reflection; it was made from the highest quality lead crystal, that is, with a lead oxide content of more than 30 percent; the high lead content, replacing the calcium found in ordinary glass, gives the crystal a remarkable hardness, exceptional transparency, and a high refractive index; the Master Craftsmen succeeded in making the massive block of crystal, delicate almost vaporous; they transformed the crystal by twisting it, pincer-working it and shaping it by hand, thus creating an aesthetically extraordinary and compelling object. The candlestick was made in the Art Deco style between 1930 and 1935 in a Craft workshop in the small town of Vannes-le-Chatel located in the department of Meurthe and Moselle in the Grand Est. (France) region, an area very famous for glass production; many local artisans collaborated with the Vannes Crystalworks and often, as in our case, were inspired for their precious creations, by the models of the Crystalworks itself. History traces the founding of the Cristalleria Vannes to around 1765, under aristocratic patronage, and it immediately became one of the most important glass manufacturers in France, producing glass tableware, and then diversifying into ornamental works in 1930; as mentioned above, the company relied on the very valuable local labor scattered in the many artisan workshops in the area. The candlestick is in good condition. Measures width cm.20, depth cm.5, height cm.15.
