This original chromolithograph of a Victorian neo-Greek scene of a mother watching her four children playing at a pool was published by Muller Luchsinger & Co., New York.
The mother is holding a distaff used to spin wool into thread. Her hand rests on fabric draped over a table with legs in the form of hippogriffs, a motif in 19th century art. It has the head of a lion, the wings of an eagle, and the legs of a horse. The three oldest children play in the stream of a fountain while the youngest splashes in the pool.
This is not a reproduction. If you magnify the close-up photos, you can see the characteristic irregular dot pattern of a chromolithograph, not the even dots of a modern print.
The colors are bright and crisp. The print shows light water marks on the top center, but in normal inside light they are only visible at very close range.
The ornate wood frame is original. On the lower edge, near the left corner, there is a 4 in x 0.5 in section of molding missing (see last photo). There are minor chips and cracks on other areas of the frame, with some separation at the joints. Otherwise, the print and the frame, both 127 years old, are in excellent condition for their age. The print has been dry mounted and rematted for preservation and the original frame glass replaced.
Image size inside mat is 18.5 in wide x 14.5 in tall.
Frame size is 31 in wide x 27 in tall.
