MISSION EBONIZED OAK ROCKING CHAIR NO. 311 1/2
Gustave Stickley ca. 1904-7, red ink maker's mark to the reverse
Item # 309VAX24P
Described in their 1904 catalogue as being "Craftsman Fumed Oak", the model 311 1/2 was offered with either a rush-seat or a craftsman leather seat.
Because the leather was often hard and uncomfortable, we often find these reupholstered in a softer manner - that is the case with this chair, which was reupholstered in a faux-leather in the second-half of the 20th century and the arms were upholstered at the same time. The result is an incredibly comfortable chair that is an absolute pleasure to sit in. At the same time, the chair retains an early and a rich nearly black ebony surface that is incredibly attractive. It is a very nice contrast against the ruby hue of the upholstery.
The back stretcher of the chair is marked with the red stencil marking for Gustave Stickley from 1904-1907 (though it might have been used as early as 1900 and has been found on examples that are believed to be as late as 1912).
Measurements: 34 3/8" H x 25" D x 26" W x 15" H to seat
Condition Report:
Reupholstered in a faux-leather second-half of the 20th century, at which point the arms were upholstered as well; early and likely original surface; minor scuffs and a few white paint marks (we can have these gently removed upon request); very comfortable, sturdy and strong - overall in very good condition.
