Monica … more "Echo 9" is a moody and colorful mixed media drawing oil by Hudson Valley, New York artist, Monica Shulman. Monica created this painting during her first artist residency in Italy in the summer of 2023. Inspired by the Italian Alps and the Valcamonica Valley in northern Italy, Monica created this painting as part of a series of painting exploring nature and the energy and spirit of the environment. She created this series of work while listening to a storm of severe thunder and lightening rage and echo off the mountains surrounding the ancestral home where she stayed during her week-long residency.

This abstract expressionist painting using oil paint and oil pastel is both sculptural and textural. The varying thickness of the the pastel and the use of line creates movement and depth. Punctuating her rhythmic, gestural marks with varying shades of green blue red and white, Monica creates a vivid, fun painting that will add dimension and a pop of color to any space. Through a heavily layered and sculptural technique and mark making, this painting exhibits a compulsive energy and the dynamic tension between reckless abandon and careful restraint. In this piece she layers oil pastel over oil paint that has been washed and layered on thick paper.
