Description: An important Georgian Pembroke table that was owned by Robert Dundas, second Viscount Melville and member of British Parliament in … more An important Georgian Pembroke table that was owned by Robert Dundas, second Viscount Melville and member of British Parliament in the early 19th Century. A handwritten label in the drawer bears testimony to his ownership of the table during his service at Downing Street. Dundas was a member of Parliament for Hastings in 1794, Rye in 1796 and Midlothian in 1801. Melville filled various political offices and was First Lord of the Admiralty from 1812 to 1827 and from 1828 to 1830. The table was ultimately inherited by Robert’s eldest son, Henry, the 3rd Viscount Melville Henry and a second label testifies its ownership by Henry’s wife Violet who bore the title Viscountess Melville.
