The set of two early 19th century sepia mezzotint engravings of works by Claude Lorrain (1600-1682).
Beautifully matted in a rich maroon/brown fabric and framed in gold, the scenes are of the Italian countryside and engraved by Richard Earlom (1742-1822).
Plate 48 is from the original drawing in the collection of Earl Spencer, plate 25 is from the original drawing in the collection of R.P. Knight.
Claude Lorrain, also known as Claude Gellee, was a French artist who spent most of his life living in Italy during the Romantic period of art. He was a leading artist in the Italian school of landscape painting. Lorrain often attributed his inspirations to classical concepts of Rome's countryside.
