The difference between Famille Verte and Famille Rose antique Chinese porcelain:

1) The subject matter: Famille Verte is Chinese in style and refers back to Chinese prints and paintings of the Kangxi era. Famille Rose is a flowery export style based on the emerging Rococo style in Europe and is either Yongzheng or Qianlong.

2) The enamel paint: The Famille Verte is clear (translucent) and Famille Rose is mixed with white (opaque).

Offered here is a Famille Verte Porcelain Tile Plaque depicting the story of A Dream of Red Mansions, manufactured in the late 1800s. The subjects are in traditional dress in a domestic setting. Its translucent paint shows vivid green enamels and polychromatic overglaze colors including stunning yellow, red, blue and black, as well as the much less common gold! It measures 11 3/8" X 9 1/2" X about 5/8" thick.
