This beautiful Shanxi cabinet, dating to circa 1860, retains its original condition and red lacquered finish, offset with striking gold accents and decorative hardware, all symbols of good fortune for the newlyweds. Forging a lineage in the wedding dowries of old, it was a meaningful gift from the bride's parents to the couple, combining both beautiful craftsmanship and traditional sentiment.
This Red and Gold Shanxi Wedding Cabinet is decorated with miao jin, a technique involving the application of gold leaf over a darker painted base. Over the years, the gold often faded, and as a result, many pieces like this have been either retouched or completely repainted. However, here, the paintings remain original, and one can still make out the details of the landscape on the doors and lower panel, although the red lacquer has worn in spots around the feet and top frame, granting the piece a unique patina and charm.
This stunning cabinet features large doors that secure into the frame via wooden dowels, giving an increased visual access to the ornamental artwork. There are removable shelves as well as a half board that can be removed to reveal a 'hidden' storage area.
