with Carl Steffeck Max Schmidt spent his free time drawing nudes in the workshop of Gottfried Schadow. He studied at the Prussian Academy of Arts with Wilhelm Schirmer, Carl Joseph Begas and Carl Krüger. He then traveled with Albert von Pourtalès from Constantinople to Syria, Palestine and Egypt in 1843-1845, then to the Sinai Peninsula and the Arabian Peninsula, Rhodes and Cyprus. Further study trips to Corfu, Rome and England followed. 1868-1872 he was a professor at the Weimar School of Art. A member of the Prussian Academy of Arts since 1869, he was appointed to the Königsberg Academy of Art by Ludwig Rosenfelder in 1872. In 1874-1880 and 1890/91 he was deputy director. He created frescoes of the Odyssey in the auditorium of the Insterburg Gymnasium. He received several medals and an honorary doctorate from the Albertus University in Königsberg. He traveled through southern Germany, Italy, the Ionian Islands and Provence in 1847-1853. When he returned, Schmidt participated in the painting of the Egyptian Court and the Greek Hall in the New Museum in Berlin. from 1868 he taught at the Grand Ducal Saxon School of Art in Weimar.
