It is a design print that dates to 1947. It originally appeared in a French magazine of the time. It is NOT a recent reproduction print. It is signed and dated the fashion illustrator known as "D". Balmain was a leading couture designer of the mid-century year often commissioned to illustrate designs for the leading haute couture magazines. This image features an elegant woman in an elegant long evening dress. Pierre Balmain was inspired by the silhouette, grace, beauty, and sophistication of the early 20th century fashion designers. His mid-century creations celebrated and embellished the form and charm of the post-WWII woman. His dresses were symbols of feminism and grace and used the finest of silks and wools. He played with the juxtaposition of fabric and draping, the variety of line and the importance of decoration and fashion accoutrements. He brought back the embellishments of pom-poms, feathers, embroidery, sequins, lace, flowers. Each design was created with a “purpose,” a function for the sophisticated chic woman.
