French tole-painted mirror with flowering rose branches. Tôle peinte ‘’literally means’’ painted sheet metal. ‘’It is a decorative technique invented in Italy around 1740. Some pieces were cut by hand from pewter, then painted by hand. This technique became very popular in France a few years later.
