An outstanding late 18th century sampler
Very fine silk over linen or worsted wool embroidery work, petit point, satin stitch and cross-stitch
It features a religious verse from a Christian hymn, popular in both British and American worship services:
"How shell the Young preserve their ways --/ from all Pollution free --/ By making all their Course of Life --/ with Gods command agree --
Another verse follows, a Biblical one from Ephesians 6:2: "Honor thy ( your) Father and thy (your) Mother, that thy (your) days may be / long in the land which the Lord thy (your) God giveth thy. ( is giving you)."
It is a quite complex picture with flowers, trees and a little dog, very lovely and positive
Signed "Mary Ann Bennett / 1793 (additional genealogical research may add more to the history of the piece)
Quite incredible accomplishment
A project like that takes long, long time and many stages of work
In a period antique frame (possibly original), ebonized wood with silvered inner border, under glass, ready for display
Measurements: Approx. 15.2" x 14.2" framed; 13" x 12" the image
Weighs about 2 lbs. 12 oz.
Condition: Very Good overall. Please see photos. The colors are still pretty vibrant. Some unobtrusive minor tears here and there, and natural deteriorations of the linen suggest a possibly silk or worsted wool fabric, as pictured, altogether commensurate with age. The frame outer edges exhibit some signs of slight wear. All original.
