Tactile Monolith no 5 sculpture by Stine Mikkelsen. Dimensions: 13 x 70 x 70 cm. Materials: Composite material based on crushed granite and fish glue. The inner construction is polystyrene. Tactile Monoliths is a minimal collection of objects created by Copenhagen-based designer Stine Mikkelsen. The designer is fascinated by objects that the user can keep on having a dialogue with; objects that make people wonder. If the meaning of an object is not clear, people feel invited to explore and use their imaginations. By using methods known from textile design, Mikkelsen created a collection of objects based on unexpected material manipulations. By challenging the way people normally perceive furniture design, she wanted to capture the users attention. The collection consists of objects with a clear reference to a function and other objects, which are more sculptural. Through this, she wanted to challenge the boundaries for how people understand textile – and product design today. Stine Mikkelsen is a Copenhagen-based material researcher and manipulatorworking within the field of experimental product design. with a background in textile design, materials have a primary role for her in boththe process as well as the final objects. Through challenging and refining methodsfrom this field, unexpected things occur which lead to new ways of making and producing. Through this, she not only challenges the way we understand textile andproduct design, she also modernises the notion of crafts. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker.
