A Japanese Meiji period tansu chest in two parts from the late 19th century in the Sendai Isho-dansu style, with reddish brown lacquer and iron hardware. Created in Japan during the Meiji era (1868-1912).
Tansu used primarily for out-of-season clothing storage. The finest examples had open-grain Zelkova serrata (keyaki) for the face wood. They are characterized by a long top drawer with an elaborated urajyo (double-action lock). Chests from Sendai were respected for their finely rendered iron hardware, commissioned from former sword fitting craftsmen

Dimension of 48" represents the two parts of the chest stacked, without the custom stands. Stands are not attached and have concealed leveling feet.
