Mid 20th c., New York, a low stool in the Louis XV style with a carved and painted wood frame from the Thomas De Angelis workshop. The stool was custom made for a dame of American society and a member of the Rockefeller family. The stool has been recovered in a Manuel Canovas silk stripe fabric in pink, red, gold and ivory stripes.
Founded in 1954, NY based De Angelis Ltd are ateliers of custom upholstery and fine drapery. "Each craftsman has his specialty. Some do nothing but hand-cut maple or mahogany frames; others, called ''springers,'' apply custom-made springs to the frame so that, when a piece is finished, it will be exactly as soft or as firm as a decorator desires. And there is even a man whose sole job is to stuff down feathers into special cases that will line the material of a sofa or chair. Naturally, the price for such meticulous handiwork is high." Excerpt from NYT Magazine article by Carol Vogel, Sept. 25, 1983.
