Reliquary statue, Kota Obamba ethnic group, Gabon. Thick wooden core covered with decorated brass sheets and strips. Estimated date: circa 1960. Sold with its metal base.
Kota reliquaries are used for ancestor worship. They are often placed on top of baskets containing the bones of the deceased, allowing the community to venerate the dead.
