Description: This antique cabinet, crafted in the 1890s, is constructed from thick pine in the style common to grain storage units … more This antique cabinet, crafted in the 1890s, is constructed from thick pine in the style common to grain storage units from Gansu and Inner Mongolia. It appears to have been modified for present-day use, featuring a door in the front, where a fixed panel used to be. In its original form, the unit could only be accessed by taking off a half board on the top, now sealed.

This cabinet features the traditional black lacquer and contrasting red and cream outer frames, with the central paintings of vases of flowers and personal possessions, which symbolise the owner's social standing. Though initially vibrant, the colours have dulled over time to create a more gentle and aged aesthetic, with the black lacquer outer frame having worn in some places. The cabinet is equipped with a single removable shelf that can provide a useful amount of storage in a bedroom or living room, as well as an unexpected aesthetic element. less
