The series was created in 1933 and this is an early edition with the publisher copyright seal "Hanken shoyu fukyo mosha Watanabe Shozaburo" dated from 1931-1941. Signed and sealed Hasui in plate. Date and titled on the lower margin.

A prolific artist and designer of the shin-hanga movement, Hasui Kawase (1883-1957) was one of most important printmakers in modern Japan. His work, mostly traditional Japanese landscape stylishly composed, was influenced by Western art. With such infusion, they display a new dimensional depth and realistic ambience. Especially many of his nocturnal scenes emphasized on the atmospheric effect by playing with light and shadow. With a career spanning forty years with about 620 designs, Kawase Hasui was recognized as a Living National Treasure for his contribution to Japanese art and culture. See less
