A … more Signed lower left 'Moessel' for Julius Moessel (American, 1872-1960) and dated 1943; additionally titled verso, 'In the Artist's Garden'.
A substantial, mid-century horticultural oil showing a profusion of summer flowers including lilies and lupins growing against a background of lush foliage.
This American Modernist, muralist and graphic artist first studied at the Munich Academy of Fine Art under Richard von Seitz. At the age of 15, Moessel was executing architectural decoration in an academic style, working with architects in Germany. After moving to the United States and settling in Chicago, he continued to paint murals while expanding into easel painting. Over the course of a long career, Moessel exhibited widely and with success including at the Art Institute of Chicago (1931-1941), the Corcoran Gallery (Biennials 1935, 1937) and the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts (1939), among others. He was a member of the Chicago Gallery Association and the Chicago Painters and Sculptors association. The artist's work is held in permanent collections of museums in both the United States and Germany including Chicago's Field Museum.
