The Dream of the Wood is a seasonal narrative of a deciduous woodland floor in South-east England which has taken me over a year to complete. The title of this photograph is a play on words from the title of an Old English poem called The Dream of the Rood (‘rood’ being an old word for crucifix.) In this poem, we hear the story of the tree that was used to create Christ’s crucifix, from the tree’s own perspective:
“It happened long ago—I remember it still—
I was hewn down at the holt’s end
stirred from my stock. Strong foes seized me there,
worked in me an awful spectacle, ordered me to heave up their criminals.”
The poem is valued as a window into early Christianity in England and many believe that the poem’s intention was to appeal to the animist beliefs of Britain’s inhabitants at the time, by using both Christian and pagan themes.
Each species was scanned separately and ‘stitched’ together post-production, to make it feel as though the viewer of the piece is walking through a woodland as the seasons are changing.
This is a giclée print on Hahnemühle Photo Rag which is a beautiful matte paper that adds a velvety depth to the black background in the photograph.
