Finders Keepers is the way I think of this 19th century candelabra base that was converted into a lamp, I suppose when electricity became the norm. I found this in a corner on the floor of my favorite antique store two or so years ago. I actually uploaded one of the original photos. I love it because it stopped me, even in its neglected state: with its old original silk cord and antique plug. And layer and layers of dark rust with only a hint of patina underneath.
So I took it to LAMF for rewiring, even though it did work with its ancient plug. Just for safety.
Our appraiser says it was converted from a candelabra at some point in its life to a column lamp. It is cast bronze in the form of a spiral vine branch, on a tripod stepped base with upturned floral base and cloven hoofs, with an Ionic column top. Love the cloven hooves -- a lamp with a sense of humor!
It is heavy: 17 pounds or almost 8 kilos.
We received dueling opinions on the lamp's origins. One appraiser says it is Italian in the 18th century style, or even 17th century style, but executed in the 1800s. Our formal appraiser describes it as French, 19th century.
Nobody agreed with my idea that it was Hollywood Regency. Too good to be Hollywood style, they say.
Frustrating that some of the gilt patina was removed during cleaning, but a really whimsical and rare piece that provides a glimpse into 19th century style and design! The diffuser shade was added on and is not original, but could be shipped in a separate box if you like.
