Description: Exceptionally fine early 19th century Chinese elm armoire. Two upper doors open to an interior with single shelf and two … more Exceptionally fine early 19th century Chinese elm armoire. Two upper doors open to an interior with single shelf and two small interior drawers. The center post that divides the upper doors was designed to slide out. When removed, it reveals a small rectangular panel between the two interior drawers. The small panel lifts up and comes out to reveal a secret drawer. Below the upper cabinet are three exterior drawers with original hardware. Below the drawers, there is a removable panel. There is a small handle that pulls out of the brass hardware. Lift up on the handle, and it releases the panel
So it can be removed to expose an open storage compartment. The armoire sits on tall square legs that are joined by carved fretwork on the front and the sides. The piece was most likely lacquered in red originally, but was expertly refinished at some point. Excellent overall condition. less
