This vivid painting seems to be both a portrait and a narrative. The portrait … more Portrait of Woman with White Scarf
This vivid painting seems to be both a portrait and a narrative. The portrait depicts a scarfed woman listening intently to what is going on around and behind her. The immediacy of her image is striking, reinforced by the way in which her hand almost reaches out beyond the boundaries of the picture. In the background are two animated figures, older men, talking with one another. The juxtaposition of the two men and the younger woman is intriguing. Is the piece based on a folk story, a religious story, or a theatrical piece? Is it an allegory? We have not been able to pin down the scene or its maker. We found it in Connecticut, USA, but it could well be European or East European.
This is a compelling image that we believe is by a skilled hand. The paint is thickly and surely applied; the images are highly expressive Probably dates from the mid 20th C. or 1980's (1983?). The signature appears to be a monogram composed of two or three letters. It could be the letter J connected at the top to a G. Alternatively, it could be three linked letters: JHG. Above the artist’s signature is an indication of either a date or the number of the piece: I – 83.
The painting is on a heavy cardboard-like cream-colored paper. It is in a cream-colored mat. in a simple silver metal frame. There is a white cardboard backing.
The dimensions are: 21.5” W x 3/4 " D x. 26” H. less
